ಇದು ನಿಮಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತಾ (ಇನಿಗೊ)

It was when G. V Iyer spoke about Hamsageethe that the crowd gasped collectively. He said: "Who do you think made the music of the film? It was not Balamuralikrishna, but T.G. Lingappa. I wanted B.V. Karanth to do the background score for the film and use his talent at working with a chorus. But Lingappa was unwilling to let anyone else do the background. So I paid him his dues and he left. Karanth did the background music. Then when it was time to give credit in the titles, he said that he had only done the background score and so it couldn't be his name. I asked Lingappa and he said, `I have resigned from the film so you can't put in my name.' Then Balamuralikrishna said, `They made the music, but I sang it so well, so you might as well put my name as music director.' Which is what we did. And he got the best music award for the film!"

His similar concert at BayArea's Foot-Hill College was also jam packed. Hope to see more such concerts where genuine Kannada artists churn our rich Karnataka music for music-hungry Kannadigas.

Thanks for sharing this information. This is awesome!!

All know that the founder of Benda kaaLuuru(ಬೆಂದಕಾಳೂರು) AKA Bangalore was Sri KempeGowda. Many may not know that there was another with the same name, Vidwan Bhairavi Kempegowda, a famous Karnataka Music composer of caliber similar to well known composers such as Sri. Muthaiah Bhagavatar

The formal version of todays Bharatnatya originated during the invention of today’s Karnataka (AKA Carnatic) Music by Sri Purandara Dasa (1484 – 1564) who in his composition ‘Adidanu’ introduced the word ‘Bharatanatyas’ for the first time . During Krishnaraja Wodeyar's reign (1811-1868) a distinct Bharatanatya style began to emerge which is now known as the 'Mysore Style'. In the past two centuries (19th and 20th), Karnataka has produced many illustrious dance teachers like Muguru Subanna, Amritappa, Dasappa, Bangalore Kittappa, Kolar Puttappa, and great dancers like Amritamma, Nagaratnamma, the incomparable Jatti Tayamma, and her disciple Venkatalakshamma. Devadasis like Rangamma, and Jeejamma were a veritable galaxy of dancers with high standards of technical excellence and profound scholarship. Recently well-known exponent of Mysore style was Prof. US KrishnaRao.

Please encourage your children to learn Mysore Style Bharatanatya and save the heritage.

Kannadigas are known for forgiveness. Let us forget it like a bad dream and just remember that one of the the all time great movies won national award for music which was directed by a Kannadiga. The musicians who took the award still sings great Kannada compositions.

To date Govt. of India has awarded the highest honor, Bharatratna to two classical musicians. One to Vidushi MS Subbulakshmi for Karnataka Music and other to Pandit Bhimsena Joshi for Hindustani Music. Both are Kannadigas.

Highly colorful and rhythmic folk dance of Karnataka that was sidelined now getting national and international attention. This year a big group of youngsters won the national prize at the Republic day parade. It is becoming popular in schools and colleges in Karnataka. Kannadigas in US should encourage their children to learn this beautiful folk art from Karnataka.

Vanakuduri Shantaram was from Dharwad. He used to speak in Kannada only with his first wife (Jayashree(?)).
His film, 'Geet Gaaya Paththaron Ne' was based on a folk life story of the main archtect (so beleived) of the Channakeshava temple of Belur and other temples in Halebeedu in Hasan district. His name was Jakkannachari.
The story of the film was written by another Kannadiga, KA Narayan (not RK Narayan). On the credit card of the movie his name is also written in Kannada script.
Narayan also wrote the story for (atleast) one more film, 'Jewel Theif' of Dev Anand, which was a block buster in mid 60s.

Kannadiga Guru Dutta's movie Pyaasa(1957)is one of the All-TIME 100 Greatest Movies released between 1923 and 2005 as per Time Magazine report. The Cinematography was by another famous Kannadiga, V.K. Murthy who recently won the Dada Saheb Phalke Award, the highest award given in India to a film professional.

Kannadiga Mr. B. V. Ramamurthy (1934-2004) was a legend in cartoon profession. For decades, with his gentle humour, B. V. Ramamurthy, perhaps the progenitor of the pocket cartoon in India. His 'Mr. Citizen' cartoon with Mysore Peta(Turban) had become a habit with Karnataka. Mysore turban and dhoti clad "Mr. Citizen", a typical representative of the middle-class of yore who did not spare anyone from lampooning. He perpetually bemused Mr. Citizen grappling with the trials and tribulations of life and has greeted Karnataka every morning for over 33 years through newspapers Deccanherald (English) Prajaavani (Kannada), Mayura (Kannada monthly). Among cartoons that brought Murthy international attention was one titled ‘Grin of the year' caricaturing Jimmy Carter, the former US President.

All great out-of-state Karnataka musicians first learned the founder
Sri Purandaradaasa’s Kannada compositions from their mothers.

Some Examples:

Sri. Thyagaraja from his Telugu mother Seetamma who had good knowledge of Kannada since her grandfather was from Vijayanagara

Smt. MS Subbulakshmi from her Kannada mother Ammal

Smt. ML Vasantakumari from her Tamil/Kannada mother Lalitaangi who was adopted and raised by a Kannada lady musician

Carnatic is a word used during invader Ourangjeb’s rule for certain geographical location in South India (see Webster dictionary ). It is nothing to do with today’s South Indian classical music based on the original Karnataka Music founded by Sri Purandara Daasa in 15th Century. MS got prestigious international Ramon Magsaysay award for Karnataka music as the citation says. Living music legend Dr. BalamuraliKrishna got honorary doctorate for Karnataka Music. Therefore use ‘Karnataka Music’ not ‘Carnatic Music’. You can also watch a lighter side of the history in a carton at youtube. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNlfmShdNj4]

TBMK
1) The 'Karnataka Sangeetha' is associated with today's South Indian Classical music since early 15th century when Pitamaha Sri Purandaradaasa invented it.
2) The name 'Karnataka State' came into existence lot later in 1970s replacing the previous name 'Mysore state'.
3) Though 'Karnataka music' was originated in the present state Karnataka, its name has no hard connection with the new name of the state.
4) Fllowing the foot-steps of Sri PurandaraDaasa many such as 'The great trinity' made innovative contributions to 'Karnataka Music' but not to so called 'Carnatic Music' a name given by invaders/occupiers.
5) Using historically correct name 'Karnataka Sangeetha' in no way takes-away the credit of enormous contributions made by musicians from other states.
6) Use of 'Karnataka Sangeetha' shows respect for our rich heritage but not fanaticism.
7) Music legends such as RKS, BMK use 'Karnataka Music' not 'Carnatic Music'
8) Last but not the least, some are trying to distort the history/facts by using word 'Carnatic' in place of ' Karnataka.

I guess neither word 'Carnatic' nor 'Karnatic' existed. (See Wikipedia on Karnataka music). Someone has posted an interesting possibility (kind of lighter side)how 'Karnataka Sangeeta' also got a name as 'Carnatic Music' during foreign invasion. (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNlfmShdNj4).
Let us proudly call as 'Karnataka Sangeeta'

Thyagaraja, Syama Shastri, Muthuswami Dikshithar and many, many non-Kannadigas composed thousands after thousands of pieces for "Carnatic" Music, how can this be "Karnataka Sangeeta" alone? Let's be proud, not fanatic!

CITATION for M.S. Subbulakshmi
Ramon Magsaysay Award Presentation Ceremonies
31 August 1974, Manila, Philippines

"Exacting purists acknowledge Srimati M. S. SUBBULAKSHMI as the leading exponent of classical and semi-classical songs in the Karnataka tradition of South India"

Ref: http://www.rmaf.org.ph/Awardees/Citation/CitationSubbulakshmiMon.htm

Please note the use of 'Karnataka' not 'Carnatic' a non-Indian word.

Today's Bharatanatya is derived from a meaningful combination of Kannada words '''Bha''' (for 'Bhava', expressions with feelings), '''Ra''' (representing ‘raga’ defined under Karnataka Music) and '''Ta''' (stands for ‘Tala’, the rhythm based on Karnataka Music). They represent key characteristics of the dance. Sri PurandaraDaasa introduced the word Bharatanatya for the first time along with Karnataka Music. Therefore please use word 'Bharatanatya'. Even Dr S.L.Byrappa has publicly suggested this as reported in thatskannada.com.
